As every years, the month of September is related to Fashion week. The collections Spring/Summer 2009 are everywhere in the main capitals of the world. Every Photograher and editors of Fashion-Trendy magazine like Vogue are attracted by the light those cities bring. However, it is not where Sofisticate is going to look for inspiration as it regards fashion. We all know, Fashion does not belong any longer to VIP’s or jet set’s from the North. And countries like South Africa and Jamaïca are now here to prove them wrong.
So let’s start with the South african Fashion Week 2008. September 8th is when it all started and will be finished at the end the month. Workshops, show rooms and fashion shows, from Johannesburg to Durban but also Cape Town. Fashion shows gather lots of designers mainly coming from Southern Africa as South Africa, Zambia, Bostwana and even Zimbabwe. It is a one opportunity in a lifetime for designers to be discovered in those kind of events and for those with much more experienced to last. Also make sure you take note of the Zambian fashion week in your agenda. The event will start in october.
With only few hours separating London from Paris, we have the K2C, Kulture to Couture with “The” London Fashion week dedicated to african designers starting at end of september. This event usually reunites more than 20 000 visitors a Week-end. The K2C idea was born from 18 african and caribbean designers (Haute couture) who got tired of being rejected by the London Fashion Week show and decided to make their own.
Let’s have a look now at the CFW, the Caribbean Fashion Week 2008. This year, in Kingston, they started the show with 3 months in advance from June 11th to June 16th. 41 fashion shows in total appeared and all coming from the West Indies.

Mahogany Model Management & Untold presents Fashion Diversity at London Fashion Week to showcase new and established designers and models in an exclusive fashion show at the Museum of London. This latest addition to London’s fashion calendar is a platform for training and showcasing new designers and models alongside more established names with inspirational collections, new faces and offering a pathway from college to the high street.
Fashion Diversity is a collective of newly emerging models, designers and artists all encountering the same barriers when venturing into the wider world of high street design and fashion, often with no real platform to express themselves. Mahogany Model Management and Untold seeks to redress that balance. Fridays shows and the first one on Saturday will showcase both established and up-and-coming UK designers. The final show on Saturday afternoon showcases the work of 10 designers from schools and colleges across London. Their designs will be influenced by the costumes in the Museum’s own stores from the 1960s and 1970s. Arrive in plenty of time for the best spot on the catwalk! This event is also in collaboration with the Friends of Fashion. Museum of London, London Wall, LONDON EC2Y 5HN//0870 444 3852
